What is Astigmatism

Astigmatism: is a condition in which the refractive power of the eye is not the same in all meridians, making it impossible to concentrate the light rays entering the eye at one point. In most cases, astigmatism is due to corneal disorders. In astigmatism, both distant and near objects appear distorted, this is because the curvature of the cornea is not uniformed over its entire surface, so that light rays are not focused at the same level.

Astigmatism can coexist with myopia or hyperopia

How astigmatism is corrected

The goal of astigmatism correction is to change the direction of light rays and focus them on the retina and convert light into an image. This is done with toric (astigmatic) lenses that are placed in a frame and help convert light into an image in the retina. Also, contact lenses can provide a wider field of view.
